ever
does a day go by where the name of Jesus Christ is not
dragged through the mud.
For
example, while I engaged in negotiations a few days ago,
the other attorney utilized the name of Christ as a
swear word at least three different times.
This is
nothing new. Every day I go to court, the Name of Christ
is bandied about as a curse word. Many times, His Name
is uttered in close proximity to the F-bomb.
Attorneys
are not the only guilty ones though. In nearly every
profession and walk of life, regardless of education,
people daily blaspheme the One True God of Holy
Scripture by taking the Lord's name in vain, and using
it as a dirty word.
As any DVD
movie will reveal, His name is used constantly in a
derogatory way. Almost never do movie-makers use His
name in a glorifying manner. Only as a curse word.
Again, on
television, Christ's name is constantly blasphemed
everywhere, unless of course, it is uttered on one of
those segregated "religious" channels. God forbid that
Christ's name be honored on a main channel. After all,
we might actually offend non-Christians!
Books and
literature are no different. Nearly every author litters
their novels with anti-Christ swear words. Is it
possible to write a bestseller without blaspheming
Christ?
It is
ironic that people are so apprehensive about offending
homosexuals and other non-Christian religious groups in
the Name of Tolerance, because when it comes to
offending the Name of God, tolerance somehow ceases to
exist.
I shutter
to think that people's eternal lives hang by a thread by
an all-righteous God.
The Third
Commandment of the Law of God is clear:
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in
vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that
taketh his name in vain.
(Exodus 20:7)
There is
plenty of guilt to go around, mine included. My faults
include the fact that I do not always speak up when
Christ's name is blasphemed.
If someone
ever smeared the name of my loved one, I would not
hesitate to speak up. So why won't I speak up every time
Christ's name is smeared? Isn't His name infinitely more
precious than those of my loved ones? God, forgive me!
Whenever I
do courageously speak up, I often receive the same
common empty-headed response: "Relax, it's only an
expression."
Excuse
me? Since when is Christ's name only an "expression?"
When
people rationalize that the name of Jesus Christ is only
an "expression," they make my point exactly! By reducing
the name of Jesus Christ to a mere expression, they deny
to the One True God the reverence and awe that He
totally deserves.
They
ultimately take His name in vain, thereby violating the
Third Commandment without apology or afterthought.
In
actuality, they are storing up God's wrath for a later
date....
Too many
Christians in America, including myself, tolerate others
to blaspheme Christ's name on a daily basis without
coming to the constant defense of His precious name. If
we Christians ever begin to act in accord with our
professed convictions, then widespread blasphemy uttered
by unbelievers would begin to wane by God's grace.
Let us
pray that we Christians develop a backbone in public so
that unbelievers will be aware that we Christians are in
their midst and that we actually believe what we say we
believe.
We should
never be comfortable with merely going along with the
ride. Instead, we need to take the wheel.
The
unbelieving world needs to know that Christians are
followers of Jesus Christ.
We do not
follow a mere expression.
